KEEPING RABBITS & GUINEA PIGS WELFARE
It is sad to see how many rabbits in the uk are confined in small hutches outside all year. Left in the cold, alone with hardly any love and attention, easily forgotten!
Including risk of foxes, unseen illness's, flystrike and hutches blowing over.
Not many people know what to look out for, so we teach all this at the workshop for over 11's.
We will also be holding courses for older teenagers in the future with certificates!
WE THINK HAVING AN INDOOR AND OUTDOOR PET IS BEST SO THEY GET THE LOVE AND ATTENTION THEY DESERVE.
If you keep a rabbit or guinea pig outside all year, rabbits and especially guinea pigs whom only have hair and not fur, can get very cold and ill and with the bad weather and in bad weather hutches will blow over.
Also by keeping your pet outside, if your pets in danger or becomes ill you could miss the signs.
I find the best way is to keep them is safely inside over night. You can let them run around the house when your there to supervise. You could just use one room for them or build a run around their cage. Rabbits will often use litter trays!
In daytime let them out in the garden in a fox proof pen or to run free when your around to supervise. Bring them in before dusk incase of foxes but be aware cats and birds have been known to get a rabbit. Guinea pigs should never be allowed to run free in a garden.
WHEN BUYING A RABBIT CHOOSE A CONFIDENT FRIENDLY RABBIT THAT RUNS TO THE CAGE TO BE STROKED, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THEM AS A HOUSE RABBIT.THEY ARE THE TYPE THAT WILL NEED MUCH MORE LOVE, ATTENTION AND STIMULATION.
